Moms Keeping Kids Safe

Moms Keeping Kids Safe

In honor of Mother’s Day – (hey, it’s this weekend if you haven’t shopped yet!) – I thought we would highlight some of the great sites that are helmed by Moms!  To paraphrase the old saying – It takes a lot of moms to raise a village and our village is lucky to have these two. Check out their sites and learn about more than just Internet Safety.

Alison Rhodes, also known as The Safety Mom, has exploded onto the national scene as the preeminent voice on kid’s safety, wellness and healthy living. She is always on the lookout for the issues facing all children – newborns to teens as well as the entiresafety mom family.

While Alison’s career began as a response to the death of her first child, over the years Alison has expanded her career platform to include the gamut of issues  facing children today from the importance of healthy eating and an active lifestyle to cyber bullying and toy safety. Alison believes that a child’s parents are their greatest safety advocate and coaches parents that when it comes to dealing with their children, it’s important to be parents first and friends second.

Mary Kay Hoal
Founder, President, COO

A proud wife and mother of five children (both biological and adopted, ranging in age from 5-18 years old), Mary Kay faces the same challenges every parent does: keeping her kids safe; raising them to be good, happy and well-balanced people; and providing them with the tools and support to create their own future.

While Mary Kay readily admits that she didn’t “get” the whole online social networking phenomenon at first, she quickly recognized its importance in her kids’ lives. After researching the disturbing landscape of social networking sites—including endless inappropriate content and thousands of predators targeting youth—Mary Kay’s mission became clear: raise the bar.

Conceived and founded by Mary Kay, Yoursphere is the first social networking service for youth that parents can embrace. Drawing on her corporate entrepreneurial experience as a media strategist, advertising, marketing and publishing VP formerly with CMP Media LLC, Mary Kay built the Yoursphere team. Is there any way I can check my granddaughters test messaging and face book?

While we don’t advocate any specific software, there is software out there that will track text messages, filter messages that contain “certain” terms, and report receivers, times, etc. But we think a bettte approach is to open up a dialogue with your granddaughter. Ask her to teach you how to set up a facebook page and friend her. Have her show you special text lingo she and her friends use and tell you why she loves it. Use these teachable moments in a non-threatening way to let her know you only care about her safety and you aren’t spying on her. Even tell her one of those “in my day” stories about someone you trusted who hurt you and how glad you are that it wasn’t posted all over facebook for everyone in the world to see, comment on and pass around. I’d love to hear from some of our other readers. Good luck – she’s obviously lucky to have you in her life.

Editor: John Law wanted to share this article with our readers. We do not advocate any specific treatment or services -but there are some interesting things to note here to think about your child’s behavior. We try not to limit comments to just “nice things” people say about our site – so, I wanted to share this readers contribution. Thanks John.
