Facebook reverts to previous terms after member criticism

Facebook will return to its previous terms of use following user uproar.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has claimed that it had received a lot of questions and comments about the changes and what they mean for people and their information’. Due to the level of press attention and user debate, Facebook is to return to its previous terms of use while it resolves issues that have risen.

Zuckerberg said: Many of us at Facebook spent most of today discussing how best to move forward. One approach would have been to quickly amend the new terms with new language to clarify our positions further. Another approach was simply to revert to our old terms while we begin working on our next version. As we thought through this, we reached out to respected organisations to get their input. This is in reaction to yesterday’s news: Concerns over new Facebook content rules

A number of bloggers voiced concern Monday after discovering that Facebook Inc. changed rules earlier this month regarding how it treats user content.

The Palo Alto-based social networking company now says in its terms of service that it will have unending and irrevocable license to use any content uploaded to its service, according to a posting on The Consumerist, a blog owned by the publisher of Consumer Reports.

The story was one of the most talked about Monday on Twitter Inc.‘s micro-blogging service.

Before now, Facebook said it would only have rights to use any content posted on its service while the user was a member of the service. Now it says Facebook will hold those rights even if a user cancels their membership. Read the Article
