a link to beatbullying.org and their Virtual March 2012 to stop Cyberbullying - fun and cool site with a great message!

This little picture is the Avatar I created for INOBTR. I shouldn’t have copied it (it is their intellectual property-I hope they’ll forgive me), but I wanted everyone to see how fun this site is. Even though this site is from the UK, it is brought to you by beatbullying.org and it is a great idea and a fun way to engage your kids in the idea that Cyberbullying is not okay. I learned about the site and The Big March in 2012 from an article from the Huffington Post. Check out the article or go directly to the site at http://www.beatbullying.org/bigmarch/,

The organizers are creating a virtual march in 2012 to encourage the United Nations to add Cyberbullying to the issues children should not be forced to endure. When you go to the site, you create an avatar and sign the petition. You can change your avatars look, there are games to play and lots of innocent fun. The Big March 2012 will be held on 31st January 2012, when the avatars will hold placards and march in a line across the sites who sponsor and support the event.

At the end of the march, the avatars will assemble in Big March Park on the Beatbullying Big March website, where the petition will be delivered to a virtual UN building.

Emma-Jane Cross, CEO of Beatbullying, said: “Violence amongst young people across the world is at epidemic levels. We have a child protection crisis on our hands, and we have a duty as global citizens to unite and insist that world leaders, politicians, communities and families stand up and take action.

Check it out with your kids!

a quick overview of the cool site Pinterest - connect with people who share your interests and ideas. From collecting recipes to planning a wedding, lots of ideas and DIY projects.

This article has nothing to do with Internet safety. Odd comment for a child safety site, I know. But, sometimes we just have to share something that is fun and shows how innovative the Internet can be. Just when you think you’ve seen everything you need to see online – here comes Pinterest. In just the last 3 or 4 days, I’ve heard this site mentioned on the radio, in 2 different magazines and on another website. So, curiousity got the best of me and I had to check it out. I don’t know about you, but I am continually cutting out articles, recipes (and I don’t really cook), DIY projects and “ideas” for things I want to do around my house. Now there is a place to not only store those ideas (get rid of the clutter), but to share with other like minded “clippers”.

What is Pinterest? In their words:

Pinterest is a Virtual Pinboard.

Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.

Best of all, you can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests. To get started, request an invite.

Our Mission

Our goal is to connect everyone in the world through the ‘things’ they find interesting. We think that a favorite book, toy, or recipe can reveal a common link between two people. With millions of new pins added every week, Pinterest is connecting people all over the world based on shared tastes and interests.

As with all cool sites online – remember to protect your identity, don’t overshare personal information and use caution when something looks too good to be true. Hopefully this is just a really cool site where you can connect with great ideas and people just like you!

Trying to stay current on what is going on -online – is an everyday job. Some of the ways we do it is to follow some people on Twitter, “friend” others on YouTube, sign up for alerts, follow blogs and weekly e-newsletters and keep talking and sharing with one another.

One of my favorite blogs is Around the Web in Seven Days – by my friend Tony Jordan. Tony and I go way back in the music business, so his blog highlights a lot of Music with tech related information – pretty hip and teens would like it. I like his blog because it’s once a week, short and often very fun. But he also is a father and helps keep me up to date on new things digital. One of his recent blogs talked about a new App that sounds pretty cool. It is still in Beta testing – but if you’re a parent and want to “test drive” it – go to their website and let us know how it works out. We’re always looking for parents who are actively using technology to help the rest of us stay in the know!

The app rewards kids for checking in and you know they’re telling the truth because their phone’s GPS verifies their location. The whole family can use it and you can all stay better connected. It sounds like a great app. Let us know if you try it out!

recommending Everloop - a safe social networking site for tweens.

We found a new site for tweens. Do your kids want to get into social networking and you’re trying to stave off the facebook route for as long as you can? Here is one option. This site is strictly for tweens. NO grown ups. Here is a snapshot of their strategy. Since I’m a grown up and couldn’t/shoudn’t sign up, I didn’t really get to play in the site, but it includes games, blogs, a place for parents and “loops” based on interests. Let’s face it, our kids want to be social online. Why not give them a safe place to do it! Check it out.

SOCIAL LOOPING

Everloop gives kids a place to connect, express themselves, and be creative.

Everloop’s innovative platform is designed with four layers of moderation to keep kids under 13 safe – it’s a loop of privacy around their communication online. Your children are free from anonymous intruders, and their personal information is secure and hidden.

Parents have control.

Every kids’ Everloop account is associated with a parent, so you can have a “dashboard” view of your kids’ activities. Older children ready for email and chat? Switch it on. Not ready for younger children to form new friendships online? You can block it. (And we keep personal information like addresses and phone numbers impossible to enter, so you never have to worry about that for any of your kids.)

a link to a great gaming site with a positive message, - fight Chaos (Greed, Gluttony, laziness, arrogance, etc) while having fun

So, I’m always curious when someone starts to follow us on Twitter and I usually check them out. What a fun surprise today! I found a new fun gaming site that has a positive message. SHAKTI stands for Super Hero Academy for Knowledge Training & Integrity. “Your mission is to train and deploy a new team of super heroes to defend against Chaos.” The warriors are super cool and there are games to play and badges to earn. The “bad guys” are Selfishness, Arrogance, Indifference, Intimidation, Self Righteousness, Laziness, Greed, Anger and Gluttony. I think the positive message is delivered in such a way that kids will embrace the game, while picking up on some good habits. Once they create their own warrior, they can earn badges (points) for things like “exercise for 20 minutes a day, complete reading a book, focus on the positive”. I didn’t sign up but it looks like it would be a fun game with a good message. Check out these warriors!

a great new resource - teach parents tech, 50+ short videos with easy to follow instructions, easy to send "note" from you to mom or dad

My computer? Its just an expensive solitaire game. That’s what my mom used to say. I would try to show her how to manage files, browse the Internet, etc, but it scared her. She was always afraid she was going “to break it”. Do you know someone like that? And maybe if we use computers everyday we forget how we learned or don’t know how to teach. Well here’s your answer! I just found this great new site Teach Parents Tech.org

Created by the folks at Google, the site offers 50+ short videos with easy to follow, step by step instructions from the Basics to Blogging. They start with a form you fill out, check the videos you think will be helpful (and not demeaning) and it emails the note from you with a link to the videos. Mom, Grandma, your best friend clicks on the video and watches it as often as they like. You might want to take special care – some videos are MAC specific – so don’t confuse the issue…

a link to 15 ways for your child to have a safer Internet experience, from Mary kay Hoal of Yoursphere.com

My friend, Mary Kay Hoal, at Yoursphere.com took part in an online conversation about things you can do to help your children have a safer Internet Experience. She offered some great tips and most importantly noted that those tips change with as your children get older. But one thing doesn’t change – dialogue, dialogue, dialogue. We have got to communicate with our kids about what they do online.

We have to respect our children while at the same time teaching them responsibility. One of the key things she shares is that using technology (and the expensive devices that goes with it) is a privilege, not a right and it must be treated as such. Use of the technology and devices should come with rules and expectations and abuse should have consequences. See her 15 Ways Blog here for great insights. Also if your younger children want to test the waters on social networking, Yoursphere is by kids, for kids and kids only, plus it’s also a safe place for them to play!

See the Cyberbullying Research Center's - Incident Tracking Form. links to great cyberbullying fact sheets and content.

Cyberbullying has so many forms and definitions. One of the resources we use is the Cyberbullying Research Center. I have had the privilege of hearing Dr. Justin W. Patchin, one of the founders, speak at a conference. They put out good sound advice and offer up-to-date resources on what to look for, how to help, and as importantly How To Report incidents. I am also a fan of their facebook page and they reminded us today that it is good to get a lot of information when reporting an incident. This might be a good form for schools to adopt or a parent to use when trying to be sure they have all of the facts to share with a school official. You can access it here Cyberbullying_Incident_Tracking_Form or go to their website. Here is what their front page looked like today:

“What’s New at the Cyberbullying Research Center

The Cyberbullying Research Center is dedicated to providing up-to-date information about the nature, extent, causes, and consequences of cyberbullying among adolescents. Cyberbullying can be defined as “willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices.”

MTV, facebook and Justin Bieber? Yep and they're teaming up to fight "digital drama". check out the campaign on facebook or at www.athinline.org

With 588,243 “likes” the facebook fan page “A Thin Line” is garnering attention. The campaign is a collaboration of MTV and facebook to help stop online bullying. And the latest face of the campaign is Justin Bieber. I have to admit he is starting to warm my heart and trust me – I’m well past the age of 13…Give it a look and if he can encourage our kids to be kind to one another – he’s okay in my book!
